My name is Chris Ray, and I teach math for Grade 6, Grade 8, Algebra I, and Geometry. I have been teaching for 14 years, including one year at CHP in 2017-2018. Before then, I taught a wide variety of subjects (middle and high school Math, middle school humanities, middle school Spanish, high school business, and college public speaking) in the Philippines, Nepal and Armenia. During the last six years, I taught Grade 8 Math and Integrated Math 1 at a nearby International Baccalaureate school in San Diego. I have a Bachelors of Science in Commerce from the University of Virginia, a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Chicago, and a Master of Teaching, Learning and Curriculum from Drexel University. Prior to teaching, I worked in international development finance with USAID and the Peace Corps. When I’m not teaching, I enjoy playing tennis, working out at the YMCA, and spending time with my family and dogs.
Too often I hear students claim that they cannot do math. After finding my passion for teaching, I challenge students to view math as a skill that can always be improved and enhanced, and I encourage them to push themselves both in terms of the intellectual challenge of math problem solving as well as the pursuit of how math helps us make sense of the world around us.
